Syosset resident and school board member to help shape addiction services on LI
Long Island, NY, April 26, 2013. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce the election of Joshua Lafazan to its Board of Directors. Josh is the Founder and C.E.O. of Safe Ride Syosset, Inc., a community outreach program that seeks to help Syosset teens get home safely and avoid driving while impaired and/or getting into a car with a driver who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Josh has partnered with LICADD to provide substance abuse education and services for Syosset’s students, staff members and parents.
Last May, Josh became one of the youngest elected officials in the history of New York State when he was elected to the Syosset School Board of Education at the age of 18, winning 82% of the vote. He graduated from Syosset High School as Senior Class President in June of 2012, and is currently in the Honors Program at Nassau Community College.
“I am honored to have been elected to LICADD’s board,” said Lafazan. “As the youngest member, I will share the perspectives of youth on Long Island, while helping to cultivate new and progressive ideas for the future. In an era when addiction is so prevalent, LICADD has been a source of aid to those who are suffering and a driving force in community prevention. As a teenager who abstained from drugs and alcohol, I look forward to working with the LICADD team to spread healthy messages to the youth on Long Island,” he added.
“The decision to bring Mr. Lafazan on board was unanimous,” explained Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi, “his academic leadership and community involvement is impressive, as is his commitment to providing the much-needed resources to students affected by substance abuse.”
In addition to his volunteer work at Safe Ride Syosset, Inc., Josh is a coach and referee in the Syosset Basketball League and volunteers each summer at Sunrise Day Camp. He’s also a member of the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department, the Nassau County Heroin Prevention Task Force and the Long Island Youth Safety Coalition. Josh interned at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, worked for the Nassau County Executive’s Office and completed an apprenticeship at the US Surgeon General’s office. In 2012, Josh was named to the Long Island Press’s Power List of the 50 Most Influential People on Long Island, and was named by Red Alert Politics as one of their 30 Under 30 in their national list.
“Josh Lafazan is a powerful role model for Long Islanders of all ages and his energy is contagious,” stated LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, “We warmly welcome him to our team.”
