Current Programs and Achievements
Since its non-profit incorporation in 1956, LICADD has conducted thousands of alcohol/drug education presentations in schools and community groups, and has directly assisted more than 80,000 individuals and/or families find effective treatment or recovery programs for alcoholism and other drug problems. The most unique feature of this significant accomplishment is the fact that, through its voluntary contributions, some Foundation support and special event campaigns, many of LICADD's services have been performed for those in need at a very low fee or without charge at all. Few if any organizations can boast of this long tradition of helping Long Islanders learn how to prevent or resolve  alcohol/drug related problems when they are not able to help themselves.

Education
Education is the first step in addressing the misconception that addiction is a personal weakness and in reducing the stigma attached to the disease. LICADD is committed to providing that education through the life-cycle from kindergarten right to the golden achieving years.

Parent-Child Communication Workshops
Parental Education entitled, "How to Talk to Your Children about Alcohol", is extremely important to the "Smart Kids" program. This critical initiative is specifically designed to help parents learn how to better communicate with their children about the risks of alcohol and other drugs. The interactive role-play workshop uses “Teachable Moments” from a Meryl Streep hosted video.

Roots and Wings
Roots and Wings is a parenting program, Published by the Hazelden, to help adults communicate clear personal standards to aid children as they encounter situations in life that require difficult decisions. Though the program is designed to be of help to all families, it can be especially helpful to families who have been affected by a family member's chemical abuse problems, as the program intertwines vital parenting information with the dynamics of chemical abuse issues.

LICADD's Strengths

  • Throughout its history LICADD has been acclaimed as a leading source of prevention through education and early intervention strategies to solve addiction and family related problems.  Stigma is based upon lack of awareness and a preconceived conditioned thought.  No other agency on Long Island has amassed a track record for nearly one-half a century transforming that stigma and assisting Long Islanders of all ages through accurate information and positively charged personal testimony.
  • As an independent & voluntary not-for-profit agency whose only affiliation is with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) - we are able to objectively tailor our programs and services purely in the best interests of our clients.
  • LICADD's administrative expertise and responsive managerial structures are evident at all levels of agency operations.  The organization is effectively able to balance its professional orientation as a health care agency with the business skills necessary to operate efficiently and effectively.  Attention to professional standards is reflected in the agency's accounting systems, budget and fiscal operation, personnel practices, planning activities and programming operations.
  • Throughout the agency's history, the governance has been and continues to be representative of the community with the Board of Directors being composed of business leaders, professionals from diverse fields and concerned laypersons.
  • The staff includes Clinical Social Workers, Credentialed Addiction Counselors and Certified Employee Assistance Professionals.
  • The organization maintains a wide support base in the community because of the population served by the agency's programs.  The legitimacy and importance of the agency's services is clearly recognized and supported.
  • Through its voluntary contributions, some Foundation support and special event campaigns, LICADD has been able to provide many of its services at modest fee levels - or in some cases on the basis of appreciative service donations.  Money is not and has never been a criterion for securing LICADD's help.
